ODA NOBUYOSHI

Oda Nobuyoshi was a dentist from Japan during the the Meiji Era (1868-1912) and was apparently a retainer for the lga clan (famous ninja clan), although what that entailed remains a mystery. This photo was taken in 1880 when he was 20 years old.

Oda Nobuyoshi, a member of the Tosa family, was born in 1860 in Sukumo City. After completing dental school in Tokyo, he established his own clinic in 1886. In 1915, he moved it to Kochi Prefecture on Japan's Shikoku Island, where it is still in business today.

The image above was contributed by Oda Nobuyoshi's great-grandson Hidemasa. Oda Nobuyoshi also served as chairman of the Kochi City Council and prefectural assembly. His wife Take was a civil rights activist who published articles for women's suffrage in newspapers. Although they eventually got divorced, his wife was the daughter of Matsumae Takahiro, lord of Ezo.

The soldiers devoted to shgun Tokugawa Yoshinobu were defeated in the Battle of Ueno during the Boshin War of the Meiji Restoration and retreated to the north. Early in 1868, the new Meiji government took control of Edo and demanded that the daimyo of the northern kingdoms appear before it and swear fealty.

Oda Nobumichi sent his son Oda Nobutoshi in his place after declaring himself too unwell to travel and formally retiring. The imperial army was being deployed to the Thoku area to fight the pro-Tokugawa rebels still active, particularly those focused in the close-by Shnai domain. Oda Nobutoshi and his senior servant Yoshida Daihachi were given orders to serve as guides and escorts.

In revenge for Oda Nobutoshi's involvement in the raid on Shnai, the Shnai soldiers burnt the village of Tend in April. To aid in the reconstruction, the Tokugawa shogunate offered a relief fund of 5000 ry. Tend originally tried to maintain its neutrality when the Uetsu Reppan Dmei of northern domains formed to oppose the imperial government, but it eventually joined the alliance in September 1868. Nobutoshi was put under house imprisonment in Tokyo in the family temple of Korin-ji when the pro-Tokugawa troops were victorious in the Boshin War, and his brother Oda Suemaru took over as daimyo. The domain's earnings dropped to 18,000 koku. As Suemaru was still a juvenile, Nobutoshi was permitted to return to Tend in July 1869 in his capacity as domain governor.

When the han system was abolished in 1871, the Tend domain was also disbanded, and Nobutoshi was named governor. Nobutoshi started working for the Imperial Household Ministry in the new Meiji era in 1874. Under the kazoku peerage system, he was given the title of viscount (shishaku) in 1884. Additionally, he enrolled at Keio University to study English there.
